One of our favorite hydrating fruits is, of course, the watermelon. What BBQ, picnic, or day on the boat is complete without a juicy watermelon? Along with being the iconic summer fruit, watermelon offers a ton of hydrating and healthy benefits. According to the USDA Food Composition Database, just two cups of watermelon has 80 calories, no fat, vitamin A (8%), B6 (6%) and C (25%), potassium (6%), magnesium (6%), thiamin (8%), phosphorus (2%). So you can feel good about reaching for watermelon all summer long!

When it comes to picking watermelon, there are a few tricks and tips for you from our friends at Melon 1.

Find the best in the bunch:

  • Choose firm, symmetrical watermelons
  • No soft spots or bruises
  • No cracks or mold
  • Dull rind (not shiny)
  • Dried stem
  • Buttery yellow underside
  • Has a “melon” scent
  • Sounds dull and hollow when thumped

Melon 1 is one of the country’s oldest and largest watermelon growers and shippers, and yet they’re still a family business at heart. Which is just one of the reasons we love to work with Melon 1 and support their hard-working farmers which you can learn more about here!

All of the foods in this fruity smoothie are hydrating which is what makes this recipe a good one to keep on-hand during the summer months. As always, you can customize this recipe by using more or less fruit or swapping ingredients. Try adding coconut milk or a frozen banana for a creamier consistency, or add frozen veggies and serve it to the kids for added fiber in their diet! Any way you serve up this delicious drink, make sure you use watermelons from Melon 1 – they're the watermelon experts!
