One thing we love about the summer is that we can find fresh from the farm watermelon, and no one does it better than Melon 1 Watermelon! Not only does Melon 1 provide customers with high-quality, non-GMO products, but they also intentionally work with family-run local farms across the United States and Central America. Providing consumers with ultimate flavor and the comfort of knowing these watermelons were grown with love.

Picking the Perfect Melon 1 Watermelon

  1. Look for a Uniform Shape
    • Next time you're browsing through the grocery store, be on the lookout for a Melon 1 watermelon that has a symmetrical, uniform shape. It can be round or oval, but avoid ones with irregular bumps or dents, as these can suggest uneven growth or poor quality.
  2. Check the Weight
    • A top-notch Melon 1 watermelon should feel heavy for its size. Pick up a few and compare. The heavier one is likely to be juicier because it contains more water.
  3. Examine the Field Spot
    • Check out the field spot-the creamy yellow spot on the rind where the watermelon rested on the ground while ripening. A darker, more pronounced yellow spot indicates the fruit is ripe. Avoid watermelons with a white or greenish field spot, as these may not be fully ripe.
  4. Tap It
    • Give that watermelon a good tap with your knuckles! A ripe watermelon will produce a deep, hollow sound. If it sounds dull or flat, it might be overripe or underripe.
  5. Inspect the Rind
    • Try to be on the lookout for a watermelon with a firm, smooth rind free of bruises, cuts, or soft spots. A dull rind is usually better than a shiny one. Although a shiny rind may look more appealing, this can actually indicate underripeness.

Storing Your Watermelon

Before Cutting:
  1. Keep It Cool and Dry
    • Store whole watermelons in a cool, dry place. Room temperature is generally fine, but if you live in a very hot climate, keeping it in a cooler area of your home will help keep the watermelon fresh.
  2. Refrigeration (Optional)
    • While it’s not necessary to refrigerate a whole watermelon, doing so can help extend its freshness, especially if you don’t plan to eat it within a few days. Place it in the fridge, preferably in the crisper drawer.
After Cutting:
  1. Refrigerate Promptly
    • Once you’ve cut your watermelon, store the pieces in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This helps retain moisture and prevents the fruit from absorbing odors from other foods.
  2. Use Plastic Wrap
    • If you’re only using part of the watermelon and want to save the rest, cover the cut surface tightly with plastic wrap. This will help prevent the fruit from drying out and keep it fresh for longer.
  3. Consume Within a Few Days
    • For peak deliciousness, enjoy your cut Melon 1 watermelon within 3-5 days. Wait any longer, and it may start to lose its texture and flavor.
  4. Keep It Clean
    • Always use clean utensils and cutting boards when preparing watermelon to avoid contamination. This will help ensure the fruit stays fresh and is safe to eat.

By following these tips, you can pick the perfect Melon 1 watermelon and store it properly to enjoy its sweet, juicy goodness all summer long! Happy watermelon hunting!

  2. I used to work at Safeway. All the old ladies would ask Mr to pick their watermelons because I always picked the perfect, sweetest watermelons.I was a courtesy clerk (bagger) and whenever the produce workers offered to help, they would tell thrm, “no we want that guys help! He always picks the best” 🤣🤣🤣

  3. the only bad part for me is carrying it home…the rest of getting a good melon is fun, and once it’s home it’s GREAT.

  9. I always go for the ones that have obviously fallen off the vine rather than be cut. If you remember that alone, chances are it will be a good, ripe melon

  10. Thanks for the tips and tricks! I’ll make sure to reference this guide next time my family and I head to the store! One tip I plan to double check for it to look for “A darker, more pronounced yellow spot indicates the fruit is ripe” when looking at the melons rest pot.

  13. My home grown watermelons taste so much better IF the vine borers and squash bugs don’t get them which they do every year.

  14. If you don’t use the whole watermelon, cover the rest with plastic wrap & refrigerate immediately

  15. I dont think I’ll ever understand tapping for a dull, hollow, flat, deep, sound etc. I can’t even imagine what that sounds like, but the rest is a piece of cake (or a piece of watermelon)

  16. Rembering doing this with my mom and grandma when I was little sure brings back some wonderful memories.

  17. A dull rind might be more indicative of ripeness, but some stores wax the produce to make it stand out more, more appealing. Take that with a grain of salt and check for the other indicators.

  18. LOVE THE TIPS ON PICKING WATERMELON. SUMMER IS MY FAVORITE FOR FRUITS. I LOVE WATERMELON SO MUCH.

  23. I can remember my dad back in the day and the big big watermelons…..he was always “thumping” them.

  24. a cut up watermelon leaves you with a lot of fruit to store, though it’s mostly water, you can handle a huge amount compared to other foods. I still notice an issue the first 2 days of storage, as there is never enough room in the fridge. It’s all about timing for that extra needed space

  32. I learned all this from my mother by the time I was 5. Having shoppers who go for you may be convenient, but people just don’t learn how it should be done. It’s no wonder a lot of consumers either ‘don’t like fresh produce; it’s too easy to get ripped off’, or think things like watermelons are produced in a big warehouse. Grown in a field? How odd!

  33. every watermelon is perfect in my book, that’s how much I love them. The only negative is all the garbage they make, messy watery and did I say messy garbage. It’s a shame you only eat half the melon, there is so much rind to it.

  40. I would love to go farming and pick my own watermelon but storing would not even be an issue. I’d have a knife and friends right along with me to sit and share it with under a shady tree. Then of course we’d have to go swimming at the nearest water source and wash the sticky sugar off us
