In collaboration with Green Giant™ Fresh, renowned for their premium-quality and nutritious potatoes, we are thrilled to launch a new series aimed at exploring the intersections of nutrition, health, and lifestyle choices. Our goal is to empower individuals to lead their healthiest, most active, and happiest lives.
For our inaugural discussion, we felt compelled to address a topic that deeply resonates with many: cancer. Whether personally affected or touched by the journey of a loved one, the impact of cancer reverberates throughout our communities and lives. We recognize the pivotal role that nutrition plays not only in cancer prevention but also in supporting those undergoing treatment and in the recovery process.
1. How did you decide to specialize in oncology nutrition, and what drew you to this area of expertise?
"I always knew I wanted to work hands-on with people, initially focusing on exercise and sports nutrition. However, it was during my grandmother's colon cancer treatment that I realized the critical role of nutrition in the medical field. This personal experience, coupled with my interest in science, led me to oncology nutrition. Oncology allows me to work closely with patients and their families, providing evidence-based nutrition guidance throughout their cancer journey. It's incredibly fulfilling to be part of their support system during such an emotional time."2. What advice do you give to people to maintain their best health, especially during cancer treatment?
"The advice varies greatly for individuals undergoing cancer treatment due to the side effects and differences in cancer diagnoses. However, a few key principles remain consistent: be gentle with yourself when making lifestyle changes, be cautious of misinformation online or on social media, find dietary habits that suit your lifestyle and family, and focus on making small, sustainable changes. For example, setting a goal to include a green vegetable in your daily diet.During survivorship (after treatment is completed), I do educate on lifestyle changes to reduce cancer risk. Not always a quick Fix! But focus on plant-based diets, educating on lean animal products."
3. What are some important daily health habits you recommend to your clients?
"Daily health habits vary depending on the individual's needs and circumstances. However, I often advise clients to prioritize self-care, maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, engage in regular physical activity as tolerated, and get enough sleep. Additionally, managing stress and finding support are crucial aspects of maintaining overall health and well-being."
4. How do you view the potato as a healthy food option?
"Potatoes are a versatile and nutritious food choice and a good source of fiber which also helps someone feel full, and satisfied They provide essential vitamins and minerals, such as potassium and vitamin C, too. Despite misconceptions, when prepared healthily, potatoes can be part of a balanced diet and contribute to overall health and nutrition. Not to mention they are a comforting food as well."5. What strategies do you suggest for people to overcome obstacles to maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
"Overcoming obstacles to a healthy lifestyle often involves addressing common challenges such as family dynamics, financial concerns, and time management. It's essential to work with individuals to identify practical solutions that fit their unique circumstances, whether it's meal planning on a budget, finding time-efficient exercise routines, or adapting family traditions to prioritize health."
6. Can you share a fulfilling moment you've experienced in your career so far?
"One of the most fulfilling moments in my career was witnessing a patient's significant improvement in nutritional status and quality of life throughout their cancer treatment. It's incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact that proper nutrition can have on a patient's well-being, and knowing that I played a role in their journey to recovery brings immense fulfillment."
